As the Tony Awards' most decorated performer, she had the chance to set Broadway history when she received the sixth Tony Award portraying Billie Holiday as Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill. This role also provided the platform to make her Olivier Award nominee 2017 London West End debut. In addition to setting the record for most awards in a competition category for an actor, she also became the first to win awards for all four categories of acting. McDonald's credits in theater includes The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (993) Henry IV (2004) and 110 in the Shade (707). Frankie Johnny on the Clair de Lune. and Ohio State Murders. McDonald was first seen on television in the Peabody Award-winning CBS series Having Our Say - The Delany Sisters's First Hundred Years. Her next appearance was that of a character actor in NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit where she starred alongside Kathy Bates and Victor Garber. McDonald, who received the Emmy Award nomination back in 1999, for her role in the HBO adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit with Emma Thompson, returned to the network in 2003 for the drama about politics Mister Sterling. The film was created by Emmy Award-winning Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. Then, in the beginning of 2006, she joined the crew of show on WB called The Bedford Diaries and over the course of the season, she was a recurring role on the television series of NBC, Kidnapped. McDonald got a fourth Emmy nomination for her part in HBO's special film of Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill in the year 2016. The Bite is a drama featuring six episodes that are based on the pandemic that was co-produced through Spectrum Originals & CBS Studios. She appeared in the show with Taylor Schilling & Steven Pasquale. McDonald was first seen in The Good Wife, a CBS show The Good Wife as a legal actress The Good Wife as U.S. attorneys Liz Lawrence and Liz Reddick between 2009 and 2018. She reprised her characters (now known as Liz Reddick) in The Good Fight in the role of an Paramount+ season regular. McDonald was nominated to win Three Critics Choice Award awards. She is currently appearing as a guest in Julian Fellowes' historical thriller The Gilded Age on HBO.
